Madhavan, John Abraham and Jet Li together

Madhavan was one of the volunteers at the 'Habitat For Humanity' event held in Bangkok recently. He joined John Abraham and Pooja Bedi from India, and Jet Li from China, who were among 3,000 Habitat for Humanity volunteers who dedicated 166 homes in Thailand, Vietnam, China, Laos and Cambodia.

The houses were built or repaired as part of Habitat's annual Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project, where the former US president and first lady helped raise awareness about the need for affordable housing and built homes in partnership with low-income earners.

Tamil Actor Nakul

The puppy fat has gone. And, six years after director S. Shankar's path-breaking musical Boys, Nakul has transformed into a lanky, fit youngster who still retains his bubbly charm.

For five years after Boys released in 2003, nothing happened in Nakul's life, “except a Telugu film, Keelu Gurram, which probably ran for two-and-a-half hours and sank without a trace.” What kept him going then was music. ‘Jayile Jayile' in Boys led to ‘Kadhal Yaanai' (Anniyan), ‘X-Machi' (Ghajini), ‘Karka Karka' and ‘Manjal Veyil' (Vettaiyadu Vilayaadu) and ‘Hooray Hooray Hip' (Vallavan).

“My film career didn't take off after Boys. The Telugu film didn't help. Singing was keeping me alive, but that wasn't what I wanted to do. Everyone used to ask me: look at your contemporaries — Bharath, Siddarth and Thaman Sai (music director). What have you done? That stirred something in me. I told myself that I must make it as an actor.”

And then, Kadhalil Vizhunthen came his way; with a catch, though! That he tone up. “The director told me: This is your chance…our chance…either we make it big or sink,” recalls Nakul, who hasn't looked back since that 2008 hit.

Soon after, he signed up for the well-received Masilamani and soon-to-be-released Kandhakottai (with Poorna as heroine).

Talking about his struggling days, Nakul, brother of actor Devyani says: “Even when I auditioned for Boys, I was among the 1,500, and was sure I would not land a role. But, I suppose I have been a bit lucky — a few good roles, some good songs, and now, Kandhakottai. I learnt a lot from director Shankar. He knows exactly what he wants. His methods are unconventional but the end result is like no one else's. I learnt that if you have to succeed, you have to have single-minded devotion.”

A shy person who is not given to excessive partying and socialising, Nakul is quite a home bird. “Only I know how much I miss home when I am away shooting. But, it is an occupational hazard.”

And, he's clear about making it in his chosen field. “I have decided to do one film at a time, and do justice to that role, rather than burn myself out. I want to be at the top, and on my terms,” says Nakul. He remembers the time when, after Boys and Keelu Gurram, many nondescript roles came his way. “Many of them were sleazy, and I am glad I stayed away. Today, when I listen to scripts, I tell my directors: ‘Please, for the sake of my career and the film, give me a bound script and don't make any major changes half-way through the film.”

Nakul considers himself a natural in front of the camera, whether it is dancing, running around trees or fighting. "I really didn't find it necessary to learn acting in an institute or go for horse riding and fencing classes. I learnt from director Shankar that if the director knows what he wants out of his actor, and if the actor has total confidence in the role and characterisation, he will deliver his best. All one has to do is follow instructions and observe the director when he enacts a scene.”

Now, that's what you call confidence!

Siddharth and Shruti Hassan together

Hero Siddharth’s fantasy film under the direction of Prakash Kovelamudi (son of K Raghavendra Rao) was launched at Ramoji Film City.

Shruti Hassan is the heroine in this film. K Raghavendra Rao is making this film under ABODE (A Bellyful of Dreams Entertainment) banner. Mickey J Meyer is scoring the music.

SS Rajamouli tapped the clapboard, Krish switched on the camera and K Raghavendra Rao directed the first shot.

Speaking on this occasion SS Rajamouli said: "There are lots of human emotions in this film. Prakash is a talented director and he can present the film different manner".

Siddharth said; I am very happy to act in a film produced by K Raghavendra Rao. Prakash is a capable director and he will take Telugu film to the international level. Prakash earlier directed the films like ‘Neetho’ in Telugu and ‘Morning Raaga’ in English. Later he directed the National Award winning ‘Bellyful of Dreams’.

Prakash said: “The protagonist role of this movie needs a broad range of emotions on his face. We are planning to release comic books, games and other collections before the release of the movie so that the audience can easily understand the theme and fantasy portion of the flick”.

Camera is handled by Soundar Rajan. JK Bharavi and Ramesh Samala are roped in for the dialogues department.

Indian actor Prakash Raj

The celebrations haven’t stopped for Prakash Raj ever since he won the National Award for best actor a couple of weeks ago. After he was honoured by the Karnataka Film Chamber, the actor attended a party thrown for him by close friends Suhasini and Mani Ratnam at their Chennai home. Then he was off to Mumbai for the success bash of Wanted: Dead & Alive. “It was sweet of Suhasini to host a do for me. She even invited previous National Award winners; there was soft music in the background and everyone had a great time. In Mumbai, Salmanbhai and all of us also had a good time,” says Prakash.

But now, it’s back to work as the actor readies himself for his debut Kannada directorial Naanu Nanna Kanasu, the remake of Abhiyum Naanun, which he produced in Tamil. But he finds it strange that his remaking the film led to a huge debate. “If I’m thrusting another culture down your throat, I understand if people have a problem. But I’m not being insensitive to Kannada culture. I’m making sensible cinema and am not copying somebody else because I have no ideas,” asserts the actor. “If an idea inspires me, I go ahead. Abhiyum Naanum is a story close to my heart and I felt like sharing it with the Kannada audience,” he adds.

The four-time National Award-winning actor was last seen in Puneet Rajkumar’s Ajay four years ago. What took him so long to come back? “A home is a home and I don’t think you can mark a time to return. Today, I’m doing a Kannada film, tomorrow it’s Telugu and Tamil. I may even direct a Hindi film another day. It’s all part of the journey called cinema,” he reasons.

The actor has seen the Kannada industry in its heyday when he did films like Nagamandala. What is his take on the sorry state of the industry today? “Every industry goes through a low phase — even the Tamil, Telugu and Hindi industries. It’s a cycle and nobody is invincible,” says Prakash.

And playing the role of his daughter essayed by Trisha in the original is Ramya. The actress was embroiled in a controversy recently. Is he apprehensive about casting her? “I don’t know what problems the individuals or the unit faced. Ramya was excited about the film and she’s even been doing the homework I’ve given her. She’s a really sweet girl. When I met her recently, I was teasing her about her popularity. I’m not playing judge here,” he says.
